Conference Goals & Objectives
A goal of this conference is to allow the attendees to learn from national caliber presenters, civil liberty representatives, contest producers, event promoters, and post secondary level instructors.
The conference will encourage a professional approach to:
- the research and development of courses
- teaching methodologies
- understanding how individuals and adults learn
- conceptual frameworks of teaching
The overall results of this process will facilitate the development of courses that are thoughtful, research-based, hold an expectation for student/attendee learning and assessment of learning, and utilizes multiple approaches when teaching. A residual effect of this is that harm will be reduced when teaching edgier classes as well as the development of classes that are no longer based on conjecture or unfounded material.
As the ALPSEC curriculum expands in future years with more advanced courses, the use of attendee portfolios will be added for those who have completed the fundamentals curriculum at a prior ALPSEC event. In order to gauge if the information is being mastered, attendees will be held accountable for their learning through the presentation of portfolios and work samples. The purpose of the portfolios and the work samples is not only to show accountability for learning but to provide artifacts to promoters that they have a viable curriculum to present at lifestyle events. Many events require proposals, which ask for course descriptions, rationales and objectives. The attendees’ portfolios and work samples will provide this. In addition, they can be a living artifact that can be constantly updated and improved upon, therefore improving their approach to teaching.
